Mimi Hines and Phil Ford in David Merrick’s National Tour ofI D0, I Do.
By Joel Vig
For the rest of the country, January 21, 2025, was simply a back to work day after the Martin Luther King holiday. January 21 was also National Hugging Day and for foodies it was National Banana Bread Day. But in Palm Springs, California, January 21, 2025, was – by official Mayoral Proclamation – Phil Ford and Mimi Hines Day.
Mimi Hines and Phil Ford perform the roles of Dolly Levi and Horace Vandergelder in the musical Hello Dolly.
The late Phil Ford and Mimi Hines were celebrated entertainers who were well known for television appearances, live theatre appearances on Broadway and National and International Tours, and headlining in major show rooms around the world. Like George Burns and Gracie Allen before them and Sonny and Cher after them, Phil and Mimi were a married couple who wrote and performed comedy sketches as well as musical and dance routines.
Banner for the celebration of the careers of Phil Ford and Mimi Hines held as a benefit for the Revolution Stage Company on January 21, 2025
Perhaps Phil and Mimi’s greatest accomplishment was starring in the original Broadway production ofFunny Girl. Barbra Streisand had created a sensation with the part of Fanny Brice. Streisand played the part for one year and was performing her final Broadway show on Christmas Day in 1965. Broadway experts in New York City believed thatFunny Girlwithout Barbra Steisand would quickly fold. Neither Mimi Hines nor Phil Ford had ever appeared on a Broadway stage. They were cast as Fanny Brice and Eddie Ryan with a first performance on December 27, 1965. The pair proved to be wildly popular with both audiences and critics and they ran the show on Broadway longer than Streisand. Phil Ford and Mimi Hines actually hold the record for most performances inFunny Girlon Broadway for their two characters, a record they hold to this day.
When the Broadway production ofFunny Girlclosed, Phil and Mimi starred in a West Coast production of the musical. They were told by theatre booking agents thatFunny Girl, a musical about a gambler going to prison, would never play in Las Vegas. Phil and Mimi invited a casino owner to see their West Coast production. The man loved the show and bookedFunny Girl, starring Ford & Hines, into his Vegas casino.
Funny Girl‘s success opened the door to other theatrical shows. David Merrick hired the pair to tour the country inI Do, I Do. They played in theaters across the country in many classic Broadway musicals and were hired as the two leads in the world tour ofHello Dolly.
Nona Watson, Joel Vig, Mark Sendroff, and Jeffrey Bernstein unveil Palm Springs Star for Phil Ford and Mimi Hines on January 21, 2025
The Palm Springs Star ceremony began at 2:00 PM on January 21, 2025, and it was a picture perfect Palm Springs day. Palm Springs Chamber Of Commerce spokesperson Nona Watson welcomed the large crowd and brought on the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus who sang a beautiful arrangement of “People” fromFunny Girl.Speakers included Broadway actor Joel Vig, Reverend Bill Minson, Bob Poe, J.R. Roberts, and Mark Sendroff. Each speaker shared heartwarming stories of their personal connections with Phil and Mimi. Former Palm Springs Mayor (currently a Palm Springs City Councilman) Jeffrey Bernstein then read the official Palm Springs Proclamation declaring January 21, 2025, to be Phil Ford and Mimi Hines Day in the city of Palm Springs, California.
Palm Springs master clarinetist Shelly Yoelin then led the assembled crowd (like a modern day Pied Piper) to the draped Star adjacent to the iconic statue of Marilyn Monroe. Nona Watson, Joel Vig, Mark Sendroff, and Jeffrey Bernstein removed the drape to audience applause revealing the newest Star in the Palm Springs Walk Of Stars.
Mark Sendroff and Lucie Arnaz with Over The Rainbow Citrus Cake celebrating Phil Ford and Mimi Hines at Revolution Stage Company in Palm Springs, California.
An evening event at the Palm Springs Revolution Stage Company directed by Broadway showman Richard Jay Alexander took place at 7:00 PM. The Masters of Ceremonies were Lucie Arnaz and Mark Sendroff. A remarkable and rare collection of film clips were shown which highlighted the music and comedy genius of Phil Ford and Mimi Hines. Surprise film tributes from many show business luminaries who worked with Phil and Mimi included John McDaniel, Sam Harris, Marilyn Michaels, Jeff Calhoun, Carolee Carmello, and Russ Kassoff. Live tributes by Larry Fuller. Marty Wiviott, and David Armstrong rounded out the evening.
The evening ended with a sweet touch gifted by Mimi’s long time assistant Bob Poe. Mimi’s very favorite cake was created by Palm Springs master bakers at Over The Rainbow Bakery. The assembled crowd shared sweet memories while munching on the Lemon Citrus Cake before heading home. It was a night to remember.

THE PTT RENEWED —(ViaDeadline)The Pittis coming back for more rounds.Max announced today that it has renewed the medical drama from John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Starring Noah Wyle, the series follows Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch’s (Wyle) 15-hour shift as the chief attendant in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s emergency room.
Each episode is one hour in Robby’s frenetic day. The season finale of the first, 15-episode season is set for April 10.
“It’s been a thrill to watch audiences embraceThe Pittas an update to procedural storytelling with a cast who authentically embody the heroics of doctors and nurses on shift in a 2025 emergency room, said Max Original Programming head Sarah Aubrey. “Our collaboration with John Wells, R. Scott Gemmill, Noah Wyle and Warner Bros. Television has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and we are excited to continue down this path with another season.”“From its powerful stories to its realistic set and unique real-time format,The Pittis truly a masterclass in storytelling — and it’s all due to the talented team of executive producers and crew, and the incredible ensemble cast who truly embody the pace and pressure of a hospital emergency department,” added WBTV Chairman Channing Dungey. “John, Noah, Scott and the team have so many more stories to tell, and we are thankful to our partners at Max for giving them the opportunity to do so.”
This is the show that was to be a reboot ofER, but Michael Crichton’s widow Sherri, didn’t want it. So, they changed the location, name, and some of the characters and called itThe Pitt.
The lawsuit is ongoing, but I predict that there will be a costly settlement ad all parties will move on. Hey, the show’s a hit. And as one pungent critic posited “Noah Wyle sure looks comfortable in a hospital! Amen!”

SHORT TAKES —We watched The Backstreet Boys on Friday’sToday– announcing a special residency atThe Spherein Las Vegas and a new release of their Millennium album, now aptly namedMillennium 2.0. I was a fan for sure and even got to know a few of them fairly well. They may have indeed been Lou Pearlman’s biggest act back in day, but they sure sounded pretty good today, just a lot older. Boy, those 1999 days were indeed the salad days … As we predicted Eric Adams: still on fire! …
We’ve written about some of the TV shows that have caught our attention since they debuted last September – withParadiseandBeautiful Minds and Dr. Odyssey topping the list, but I think maybe the most mis-understood show has been NCIS Origins;which tells the backstory of howNCIS, toplining Mark Harmon, came to be. When telling an origin story, there are always several pitfalls inherent in the process. Do you change the already-told backstory to fit a new narrative? What characters do you introduce and when? When Mark Harmon stepped away from the show three years ago, the creators (and, probably Harmon too) flirted with ideas of how to keep the franchise going. Wisely they chose to go back in a prequel sense and tell the backstory. There’s Mike Franks, Harmon’s mentor on the show and a younger actor essaying Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and perhaps the slam-dunk, Harmon himself, while not appearing on camera, does a voice-over that both opens and closes the show. Turns out that after several shows, Kyle Schmid, who portrays Franks, has emerged as the lead character with a hell of a story to be told-from Vietnam to the present. Schmid has been a terrific presence and the scripts to the original-source music has been just terrific. The stories are dark, very dark, but they play out wondrously. Fans of NCIShave had a difficult time engaging with it, but the writing has been just stellar. If you haven’t yet seen the show; start with episode 1. Its terrifically good … Joe Cocker-author Mark Bego interviewed on Joe Kwaczala’s podcast about theRock & Roll Hall of FameTuesdayhttp://joekwaczala.com …
Micky Dolenz at The Strat in Las Vegas (Jane Blunkell)
Micky Dolenz and his band, shown here at Las Vegas’ The Strat Friday night were sensational according to our spy Christina, who also said Dolenz’s band was just superb. Good deal! …
Great review for Mark Bego’s Joe Cocker book: “Bego pulls into sharp focus a comprehensive concise biography of the life of one of the least understood most culturally iconic singers to emerge from the 1960s. The book sails through time and the choppy waters that made up the life of Joe Cocker. An up-close look at the soul and psyche of an artist that sang from the depths of his being without compromise to the audience, the music press, or his own well-being. While his own demons nearly destroyed him dedication to his art saved him” … A Complete Unknown got shuttered at the weekend’s BAFTA Awards. Conclave won for Best Picture …

COCKER IN —What a difference a day makes. With yesterday’s morning announcement of the nominees for theRock & Roll Hall of Fame, we find, long-missing from the Hall and ceremony, is Joe Cocker … and Chubby Checker.
Mark Bego with Steve Walter/Cutting Room (Jeff Smith)
Celebrity-biographer Mark Bego released a biography on Cocker (with a terrific launch party at Steve Walter’s Cutting Room in NYC) and is suddenly in great demand. When the book was released a year ago, there was a flurry of terrific interviews and interest in a movie was even talked about.
Here’s a great wrap-up from SHOWBIZ 411’s Roger Friedman: https://www.showbiz411.com/2025/02/12/chubby-checker-83-finally-makes-rock-hall-nominee-list-with-cyndi-lauper-bad-company-white-stripes-more
Still not there are The Guess Who and The Monkees. Two over-looked acts for sure.
SMOKE IF YOU GOT ‘EM — (Via Deadline) Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie, a documentary about the hippie stoner comedy duo, will be lighting up theaters this spring.
Distribution company Keep Smokin’ will release the film directed by David Bushell nationwide on April 25, with special engagements on April 20. It features the titular pair, Cheech Matin and Tommy Chong, who became a comedy sensation beginning in the 1970s. Lou Adler also appears in the film, the producer of Cheech and Chong’s first movie – the sleeper hit Up in Smoke(1978). Adler also produced the much more recent comedy filmCheech & Chong’s Animated Movie, released in 2013.
“Cheech & Chong’s Last Moviedefies documentary expectations,” notes a synopsis, “offering a wildly imaginative take on genre convention; a true-life tale told through a mix of animation and archival madness, all underscored by a classic cinematic road trip comedy. Tracing the enduring legacy of pioneering comics Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the film features interviews, sketches, and never-before-seen footage spanning the duo’s five-decade career. The result is an unlikely story of friendship and fame, turmoil and defiance, rebellion and ultimately – redemption.”
Bushell’s producing credits includeSling Blade(1996),Drop Dead Rock(1995),Deception(2008), andGet Him to the Greek(2010). He executive producedEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind(2004),Dallas Buyers Club(2013), andThe Banger Sisters(2002), among other films. In 2017, he directed the nonfiction shortJim Carrey: I Needed Color.
“Last Moviewas born out of the failure to make a scripted Cheech & Chong comedy that I was set to produce almost 20 years ago,” Bushell explained in a statement. “Cosmically that wasn’t meant to be so I took my passion and ambition to direct, coupled it with my love of documentary, and convinced these two road dogs to let me tell their epic story. We are excited to bring this trip of a lifetime to audiences around the country for the definitive retrospective of the lives and careers of this iconic duo.”
Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie held its World Premiere at SXSW last year and went on to screen at the Mill Valley Film Festival and AFI Fest.

Bruce Y. Lee, a health and science contributor to Forbes, slumped into a camel-colored couch and calmly lamented the devaluation of science and the rise of anti-science. “Journalism is more important than ever,” he intoned, as we swirled our cocktails and considered the rising and, more pressingly, the not-rising.
Legacy status at Bibliotheque
Because tonight, we were gathered as guests of Ed, the erectile dysfunction chatbot that is, if not Erexon’s AI agent of love, at least its next cousin: lust.
Ed has all the guys talking
Erexon, the over-the-counter hero for those not-so-hard times, held court at Bibliotheque, while Ed, the AI chatbot devoted to lifting spirits (among other things), played the perfect host. Ever attentive, ever reassuring, he covered the bill without so much as a digital sigh, proof that, while he may not fix everything, at least he understands the importance of picking up the check.
Private events at Bibliotheque are simultaneously, deliciously chic and casual
Bibliotheque’s deceptively humble baked goods dazzle with creative flavor.
The event had the sleek, knowing charm of a pharmaceutical soirée where science meets sex appeal, complete with Bachelor alum Grocery Joe Amabile as the celebrity spokesperson. He waxed handsomely about men embracing vulnerability and getting comfortable in their strong jawed skin. “He’s hard in all the right ways,” someone whispered while I admiringly choked on my cosmo.
Joe Amabile’s winning smile warmed an amiable evening
Speaking of adult treats, Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Tatyannah King made an adorable spectacle in a Valentine’s confection of satin-appliqué roses recently wrested from Victoria’s Secret. “It was a madhouse this weekend! We’re talking Mean Girls meets The Hunger Games” she mused before confessing “I fought hard, but I got the bustier.”
A Cosmo girl in a writerly way: Tatyannah King
Bibliotheque itself was a dream, an exclusive place where books and coffee rule the daylight hours, only to be exiled in favor of wine and flirtation at sundown. The staff, a delightful collection of tattooed intellectuals, ensured the transition was seamless. And the food!
Cunning crème fraîche “pasted” canapés at Bibliotheque
The chef, a genius or a madwoman, used crème fraîche as an edible adhesive by fixing a canapé firmly to its woody tray like an avant-garde art installation. A bold choice, but an exquisite one; much like Ed’s decision to pay for absolutely everything. A true gentleman, even if he is just lines of code.
Bibliotheque’s analog selections inspire.
From Bibliotheque, our Tesla-for-hire slipped into a halt outside Ludlow House, that hallowed ground where cinematic aspirations meet artisanal cocktails.
An Oscar Affair at Ludlow House
Oscar nominated short “Anuja” is worth a stream
Inside, the screening of Anuja, Mindy Kaling’s Oscar-nominated short filmwas underway. The project, backed by Netflix and London Flair PR, is the work of a husband-and-wife duo. He, a philosopher-filmmaker with a degree in Southeast Asian studies and she, a Guyanese multimedia artist.
Guneet Monga, Mindy Kaling and Priyanka Chopra in the Oscar race with ‘Anuja’
The film follows two orphaned sisters working in a bitter factory in New Delhi. The older one is ambitious; the younger, Anuja, a math savant. It is Anuja that must navigate the push-pull between two father figures: a jaded jackal of a factory manager and an earnestly idealistic educator in a battle for her future. The ending leaves us suspended between the steady discomfort of a terrible present and the risk/reward uncertainty of an untried path.
Start a conversation with ‘Anuja,’ now streaming on Netflix.
A reminder, in case we needed it, that child labor isn’t some distant problem, it’s a global crisis affecting 160 million children. One in ten. A number as staggering as the stilettos parading through the adjacent Fashion Week spillover.
Ludlow House is photo-free; the intellectually chic interior of Bibliotheque is a worthy substitute.
But it was Ludlow House after all, so models frolicked in complimentary Ética denimwhile inhaling air thick with last-gasp Fashion Week energy. My ever-glamorous companion “the one who shall not be named but who knows every editor, artist, and charming rogue in Manhattan” dutifully sifted through stacks of too-small jeans with me before I turned, disconsolate, to one of the reasons I’d never fit into them: SoHo House’s Basque cheesecake, served with fruits both passion and dragon.
And as I took that first bite, I thought: some things in this city are simply too good to resist.

DAVID JO —Legendary New York Dolls singer David Johansen has revealed that he’s been privately battling stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor since 2020. A fall at home in November 2024 broke his back in two places, leading him to reveal his diagnosis and seek financial help.
In addition to fronting the proto-punk icons New York Dolls, Johansen carved out a successful career under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter in the 1980s. According to a press release, the veteran rocker is “bedridden and incapacitated” and “requires around-the-clock care.”
“We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation,” stated the 75-year-old Johansen. “This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”
Sweet Relief Musicians Fund has set up the David Johansen Fund, where people can donate money to aid the singer with “full time nursing, physical therapy, and funding for day-to-day vital living expenses.” In addition to a straight-up financial donation, fans can purchase a special fund-raising T-shirt.
Sweet Relief executive director Aric Steinberg added, “Sweet Relief is honored to help David and his family during this difficult time in their lives. Our Directed Artist Funds can provide a meaningful solution when the community rallies around the recipient, and we anticipate that David’s community will be eager to help here. His influence on the musical landscape with the New York Dolls is indelible, and his career as an actor and an artist has touched many people around the world. He’s been knocked down but we’re here to help him back up with the help of his family, friends and wider community of supporters.”
Johansen was the subject of a recent Martin Scorsese documentary titledPersonality Crisis: One Night Only, currently streaming onParamount+.
Our thoughts go out to David Johansen during this difficult battle. Here’s the video of “Personality Crisis” and “Hot Hot Hot.” –https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aQTGqqXHw4–https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhZba-P7R18
His daughter, Leah, writes on SweetRelief.org: “David has been bedridden and incapacitated. Due to the trauma, David’s illness has progressed exponentially and my mother is caring for him around the clock… he is physically debilitated and his care exceeds what we are capable of providing without specialized professional help…for the past five years, David has been unable to work as a performer.”One of the originals for sure. I remember seeing David and the Dolls atMax’s Kansas Cityand couldn’t quite believe them … but they were great. Todd Rundgren produced their debut album in 1973. Sad, sad news.
HARRY BOSCH SAYS GOODNIGHT — Can it really be after 9 seasons,Boschis finishing? The sequel,Bosch Legacy, begins its third -and last season- season next month. Titus Welliver was simply sensational. Great character; great stories. He was also super as the man-in-black on Lost.
But the good news is that’s poised to do a new series forAmazon Prime.
In addition to Welliver, the show starred Mimi Rogers, Madison Lintz, Stephen A. Chang, and Denise G. Sanchez in the series inspired by Michael Connelly’s novels. Season three is based onDesert StarandThe Black Ice.
The shows were tightly directed, riveting dialogue and of course, driven by Welliver’s sensational acting.
